I’m going to change lanes a bit on this week's post; enough about me crying at movies and gushing over my grandchildren. Instead, I thought I’d give you a small…
Last week I asked for some criticism. Some of you were up to the task, no one was too brutal, and the general responses were kind. The general tone of the feedback was for me to be honest and more vulnerable. I have no issue with being honest, especially if I can attach humor and sarcasm with that honesty. I do enjoy laughing at myself. (usually in retrospect.)
I’ve been writing these blogs for six or seven weeks without any feedback. My publisher recently provided me with all the comments that have been posted so far, from I assume the world, at least from the “E” world or however the social media world works??
I'm going to change gears a lit on this week's blog. Instead of writing about my writing process or how I used ideas and friends from my personal life to write On and On, I'm going to tell you a little about my favorite subject, me!
Many times, an author’s first book uses experiences from their lives to tell the story they are writing. It’s not necessarily a good or bad thing to do, for me it just happened naturally. On and On is not autobiographical, it’s not a story about my life. It is written in a first-person narrative, and my voice is very prominent. I’ve been told by friends who have read the book that they hear and see me as they read.
My main profession is not an author. Looking at my book sales emphasizes that fact. Writing isn’t a difficult task for me to do, good meaningful, clever writing is much harder. Making the time to do it is my biggest obstacle. I can sometimes get on a small roll and focus through the daily requirements of being a physical education teacher and jot down a few lines during lunch or between classes. As I’m writing this blog with five coaches’ bullshitting about their weekend bets, kids needing locker combinations, and general chaos.
I decided to make my main character immortal so as to tell a series of shorter stories that could be, but didn't have to be related. The idea of writing two hundred pages felt overwhelming. Breaking the book down into several self-contained,
This will be my very first blog, ever. To add some context, I do not have a single social media account. I’ve never posted a picture or commented on any platform. Of course, I’ve forwarded funny or inappropriate pictures to friends, but that has been the extent of my online presence. The reason for my lack of participation is simple, I generally don’t care about most things people post. I could care less about political rants, what you're eating, how much weight you’ve lost, or cat pictures. (I’m a dog guy.) I have a wife who will inform me of any important events she reads via social media that she knows I would find important, parties and golf tournaments.
